Things are starting to get interesting in the Titan's Tower as they prepare to locate the former Titan Raven. This issue does a great job of explaining the origin of Raven, for those new TT readers who are really familar with the character. This issue really helps explain who Raven once was and brings up some major questions as to what she has become.
We also get to see the long time Titan's villains: Gizmo and Mammoth who get their butts kicked in all kinds of ways by Cyborg, Starfire, Beast Boy, Wonder Girl and Kid Flash. Many new fans are only familiar with these criminals through the Teen Titans Cartoon Show. While they are obviously lesser villians here than in the cartoon we get to see some great interaction as the Adults and Kids start working together as a team.
But there is still a great deal of uneasiness between the adult Titans and the Teen Titans, especially between Starfire and Robin. Kory apparently doesn't much trust Robin, most likely stemming from his misleading her in issue 5 and the fact that he isn't Dick Grayson. Tim unlike Dick isn't as open with his feelings and his plans. She isn't used to a Robin who is so much more like Batman. Tim is willing to manipulate her and go against her wishes. Not to mention the other kids are more likely to follow Robin's lead than her's.
You can espcially see this when the Titans are discussing Raven. Robin is about to explain what Batman told him out the empath, but is cut off by Starfire who says 'Batman does not know her like WE do.' Seems a bit rude of Kory if you ask me. Sure, Batman might not worked alongside Raven, but Nightwing has. Wouldn't Dick have already debriefed Tim about Raven as well as Batman?
I'm thinking that mistrust between Kory and Tim is going to be a long running story plot used to make everyone understand that this isn't the cartoon version or old comic Starfire & Robin.
I think the only things that annoy me in this issue involves Superboy and Robin. Don't get me wrong, they're both in character and totally cool, but...
Well Superboy in trouble all the time at school is getting kind of old. Sure it was funny the first couple of times, but now its getting kind of played out. I understand they want to show that Superboy isn't really fitting in back in Smallville, but come on... Doesn't he have any friends there? Kon is a very social person. It wouldn't hurt to show Conner having some sort of fun even if it's just talking with some kids in the hallway...
And then there is Robin... Sigh... As many of you know Tim Drake will soon be hanging up the mask and cape in an up-coming issue of ROBIN. Here in TEEN TITANS Tim is starting to question whether or not he wants to continue as Robin. He apparently feels that the strain the costume is putting on his life and his relationship with his father is too much.
Now while this sort of self-doubt is common for the chracter, I'm still furious that Tim Drake will soon retire. From the looks of things, Tim will only be around long enough to help rescue Raven. After that, the Titans will be one member down.
Still despite my own personal feelings about what is happening to my favorite heroes, this issue of Teen Titans is a solid one. Great art, great character and a great storyline. I'm really looking forward to see what happens when the Titans finally locate Raven and the Brotherhood of Blood.
