Giant fists pounded on buildings, rocking their foundations and spewing forth a hail of stone. Frightened citizens of New York City frantically ran for cover, praying that they would somehow be spared. High above the frightened masses, massive robots continued their battle, not concerned with the lives of the innocents below. Even higher above the robots, joyous cheering and laughter could be heard.
"YES!! THIS IS AWESOME!!" yelled Bedlam as his most recent creations wreaked havoc on the metropolis. He thought back to his last attempt at having fun. "Man, am I glad I got outta there! Those little losers kept ruining everything! But here..."
Bedlam spread out his hands toward the city below.
"Here I'm totally in the clear! I can do whatever I want, and best of all, no stupid HEROES to get in my way!"
As if on cue, the sky began to darken. Violent storm clouds covered the sun, thunder roaring as winds began to rise. Bedlam looked around, curious, just as a booming voice rang out through the storm.
"I SAY THEE NAY!"
An incredible bolt of lightning pierced the clouds, striking one of the giant robots. Damaged, the machine looked toward it's attacker, as did it's creator. Atop a building he could make out a large figure wielding a hammer.
"What the f--"
Bedlam was (fortunately) cut off as the second robot's head exploded, hit by a focused blast of repulsor energy. An armored figure flew through the blast.
"One down! Finish off the other!"
"I have it under control," replied a digital voice. Through the chest of the first robot flew an android clad in green and red, his eyes blazing with energy. Bedlam, totally confused, yelled out.
"WHAT THE HELL'S GOIN' ON HERE?!"
Bright lights glared at him from a small aircraft right above. In an open door on it's side stood a figure clad in Red, White and Blue.
"I'll tell you, son. You're going down! WANDA, NOW!"
From behind the speaker, a woman clad in scarlet red emerged, hands glowing with energy. Instantly, Bedlam found it increasingly difficult to access his powers. Stunned, he began to fall, only to be saved when a grapple arrow snagged his foot. The bowman began to pull him onboard.
"See now, what were you thinkin'? Attacking New York, in broad daylight, on a SATURDAY! Some of us have cartoons to watch!"
Bedlam raged, forcing back the scarlet woman's powers, rendering her unconsious. He blasted the quinjet, bathing in in purple energy. The others approached from behind, but were quickly transformed into frogs. The purple energy slowly began to crush the jet.
"OH, SO YOU THINK YOU'RE FUNNY, HUH?! Well, y'know what I think is funny?"
Bedlam raised his hands, spewing forth a purple energy which engulfed the city. Objects became more pliable, inanmate objects came to life as New York City became a giant cartoon. Only the heroes remained normal. Their leader, barely phased by his opponent's awesome power, rallied his teammates.
"Ok son, playtime is OVER! AVENGERS ASSEM--"
"Awright, break it up!"
The team's captain was stunned to see the figure appear in mid-air before him. Glowing with otherworldly energy, he turned toward the heroes.
"Great job, guys, really appreciate it, but I'll take it from here," said the stranger.
"Hey, lite-brite! If you wanna play, you've gotta get in line! I'm busy right now!" yelled Bedlam, upset that yet another super-jerk was messing up his game. The new player turned towards the demi-god.
"Bedlam, a.k.a. Mathew Stewart; you are not of this universe and as such have become a threat to all existence. I'm giving you one chance: Return to your proper reality and forfeit your dimension-spanning powers immediately."
Bedlam chuckled to himself.
"Really? One chance, huh? How nice of you to give me a chance! Oh, but I don't have anything to give you... well, except THIS!!"
Bedlam fired a focused beam of purple magic at the glowing figure, intending to transform him into several tons of lunchmeat. His opponent held out his hand, opening a yellow portal through which the blast traveled into nothingness.
"*sigh* Do we REALLY have to go through this?"
Surprised and enraged, Bedlam fired a massive blast of magic, enough to level a small city. He was through playing. A deafening sound emerged as the blast hit it's target, incinerating everything in it's path.
Another deafening sound was heard, this time from within the blast itself. With an incredible burst of energy, the magic blast was broken. Bedlam doubled back. The stranger was unharmed, eyes glowing with primal energy.
"You want it that way?! HAVE it that way!"
The being extended his arm as raw dimensional energies crackled around his hand. Instantly, Bedlam found himself engulfed is a strange yellow light. The light constricted him, pulling him through the dimensional fabric. He struggled, using every ounce of his magic in an attempt to escape. His opponent raised another hand, and it was over. Bedlam was gone.
The team of heroes, utterly stunned, watched as their savior turned towards them.
"Ok, with Bedlam gone the city is returning back to normal, and any damage he's done with be repaired. You guys ok?"
The archer stepped forward.
"Yeah, uh, just one question... WHAT THE HELL JUST HAPPENED, AND WHO THE HELL ARE YOU?!"
The being laughed. "Actually, that's two questions. I'm Nexus, and it's my job to seek out and rectify any damage done to the fabric of reality. Bedlam was from another dimension, so I sent him back. Simple enough?"
Without waiting for a response, Nexus disapeared in a flash of yellow. The city had returned to normal, leaving all of the heroes in stunned silence.
"That's it! I'm joinin' the X-Men! I bet they never go though stuff like this!"
Well, ALMOST all...
